What is the afterlife? What do people believe?

Recent research on religion has produced some interesting feedback on religious views and the afterlife.

  • More than half of American Christians believe that at least some non-Christian faiths can lead to eternal life
  • Shows that 7 in 10 Americans claiming a religious affiliation say that many religions can lead to eternal life. About one-fourth say theirs is the one true faith.
  • 80 percent — gave examples of at least one non-Christian religion that they believe can lead to salvation; 61 percent named two or more non-Christian religions.
  • 30 percent of Americans believe that whether one achieves eternal life is determined by what a person believes.
  • 29 percent said eternal life depends on actions.
  • 10 percent said the key to eternal life is a combination of beliefs and actions.
  • 30 percent said something else is the key to eternal life; they don’t know what leads to eternal life; or they don’t believe in eternal life.
